Next on the WIC Week red carpet runway is Project Accountant Olivia Field who we love to count on. Here’s just a glimpse into her time and her role at Murray Company…

“Switching gears into this industry wherein my position allows me to support the Murray Company field teams & operations crew hard at work, bringing our projects to life, has been extremely rewarding. Construction accounting is unique because it affords me the opportunity to gain insight on how the field operates, while closely following each project from start to finish, making the number-crunching more exciting. In my 6 years with Murray Company, I’ve been presented with many challenges that have turned into personal growth and a deeper understanding of this fascinating industry. All along, I’ve felt 100% supported and inspired by everyone on my team and beyond. I trust that my personal journey will inspire the next generations of female accountants to set sail on their adventure in construction.”

WIC (Women in Construction) Week has officially kicked off (March 3-9) and serves as the perfect opportunity to spotlight women in construction and women here at Murray Company. Meet Project Engineer Naomi Plascencia and find out why she enjoys working in our unique industry and specifically, at Murray Company.

“As someone with family in the trades and the industry, I have always been intrigued by a career in construction. Quickly after starting my career, I realized how rewarding it really is. Being a woman in construction brings me a great sense of pride, for not only contributing to my family story, but for working at wonderful company and with an awesome team here at Murray Company. I reap great rewards from challenging myself daily and learning new things. The fact that no day looks the same is especially exciting. Even though I’m enjoying my work today, I am especially excited about what the future holds.”

So many important topics have surfaced this week as we spotlight women that make us part of Murray Company’s backbone, supporting many facets of our business. From gender stereotypes, to rewarding careers, dirty boots and big ambitions, climbing ladders and breaking down walls.

Karla Diaz is passionate about her career as an Administrative Assistant and offers us her insight on wearing many hats, and welcoming new opportunities each day…

As a woman in the construction industry, I no longer only think of men in the trenches using their hands and strength, bringing home the bacon in dirty boots. I see hardworking women wearing dirty boots and hard hats. I see inspiring women with many years of experience leading people and projects; women in the front lines and behind the scenes like me, in different capacities, as project managers, project executives, engineers, welders, accountants, administrative assistants etc. Adaptability is a must in an ever-evolving industry.

“As a woman, I can relate to the challenges that wearing many hats presents; a skill that serves us well in this industry. I feel confident and proud to see that we are not intimidated, but rather supported, by men with many years of experience in the industry.

My interest in acquisition, repurposing, and development of commercial real estate brought me to Murray Company. I was seeking community, and a deeper understanding of how commercial properties are developed ground up.

I am excited to be part of an industry that welcomes diversity, has many sectors of growth opportunity, builds communities, and is essential to our economy’s infrastructure.” – Karla Diaz

Despite representing a small percentage of the demographic, women’s roles in construction, in the office and field alike, come in various forms.

Many of the titles/positions that women represent in the general contracting world, and our subcontracting community, are integral to the stability on each construction project and the growth of a company. From a contract’s perspective, Administrative Assistant Melissa Martinez knows a thing or two about that…

“Being a woman in a male dominated industry means gender stereotypes are being broken down and it presents the opportunity to contribute to the development and transformation of the industry by bringing in alternative perspectives to the table. I find it empowering to be part of the 10% of women in this industry. I specifically enjoy working for Murray Company as I’m afforded the opportunity to provide suggestions on how to tweak internal procedures within my discipline and then see them in action” – Melissa Martinez

When preparation meets opportunity, wonderful things happen, but should opportunities not come at the right place or time, just build your own door. This is the perspective of Ieasha Harbor from our NorCal branch who reflects on her gratifying journey in construction,

“As an 18-year member of UA Local 398 I have acquired and mastered many skills. Not only am I a woman, but a woman of color, and have overcome so many challenges. I take pride in supporting other sisters and leading by example in this male dominated industry.” – Ieasha Harbor, Plumber/Fitter
