Forever With Us: Murray Company Unveils Bust Honoring Kevan J. Steffey

Forever With Us: Murray Company Unveils Bust Honoring Kevan J. Steffey

For those who don’t know, Kevan J. Steffey joined the Murray Company family in 1973 as a pipefitter apprentice and, over the course of several decades, rose to become Murray Company’s CEO. Kevan was the company’s 7th employee, and he left an indelible mark on Murray Company — then and now — particularly in the realm of Advanced Technology. In fact, Murray Company’s Advanced Technologies Facility in Rancho Dominguez bears his name: the Kevan J. Steffey Advanced Technologies Facility.

Kevan’s charisma, unique style, creativity, sense of humor, wit, and deep well of knowledge transformed the way Murray Company connected with clients, pursued new work, and built projects and lasting relationships alike.  In May 2017, Kevan retired from Murray Company and transitioned into a new role as Chairman of the Board. Though he passed away on December 10, 2023, Kevan remains forever part of the Murray Company family and now his presence is felt in a new way, too: a beautifully sculpted bronze bust of Kevan resides permanently on the 5th floor of Murray Company’s headquarters.

On Monday, August 27th, a special recognition ceremony was held in the lounge of the Cypress office, the unveiling of this very statue commissioned by an artist in Utah.  Over 100 personnel attended, along with very special guests and some of those dearest to Kevan including Rita Steffey (Kevan’s wife), Betty Carner (whose husband, John Carner, previously owned Murray Company and sold it to the ESOP), Katie (Kevan’s daughter, with her two daughters), Kristen Steffey (Kevan’s daughter and Murray Company’s Marketing Assistant), retiree Roger Legros, and dear friends and aviation enthusiasts Fred and Marie Von Zabern.

Chairman/CEO Jim DeFlavio welcomed the curious audience and shared a brief history of Kevan’s time with the company, highlighting his tremendous contributions across the organization and beyond. He reminded attendees of the icon Kevan was and the debt of gratitude the company owes him for its continued success.  If you missed it, you may watch Jim’s presentation at the link below.

“We thought it would be good to give him a home here permanently,” Jim shared, “and have him be here with us. Kevan is always here with us in spirit…he’s here with us forever.”
