Murray Company Judges the Mechanical Problem at the ASC Student Competition; Cal Poly SLO Takes 1st and 2nd place

Murray Company Judges the Mechanical Problem at the ASC Student Competition; Cal Poly SLO Takes 1st and 2nd place

The 2026 ASC Regions 6 & 7 Student Competition and Construction Management Conference in Reno, Nevada is one of the most anticipated recruiting and industry engagement events of the year for Murray Company, fellow trade partners, industry associations, and general contractors alike.

Each year, top construction management students gather for an intensive three-day competition that simulates real-world construction projects known as “Problems.” Students from across the Rocky Mountain Region (Region 6: including Arizona, Colorado, Idaho and beyond) and the West Coast (Region 7: including California, Hawaii, Oregon, and Washington) compete in high-pressure, team-based project scenarios that test their technical knowledge, leadership skills, and ability to think critically under tight deadlines.

For more than a decade, Murray Company’s NorCal team has participated in this annual event — not only as recruiters, but as mentors, judges, and industry advocates. The conference provides a unique opportunity to connect with driven students from universities both local and nationwide, while sharing insight into the rewarding and impactful careers available in the mechanical construction industry.

Representing Murray Company this year were Talent Acquisition Partner Hector Lujan Jr., NorCal PX Ryan Lopes, PM Nick Breuer, PM Ryan Schacherbauer (not pictured) PE Braden Beck, and San Diego Assistant PM Brett Jones. In partnership with the Northern California MCA, members of our team served as judges for the Mechanical competition, evaluating detailed project proposals and live presentations from student teams. The level of preparation, professionalism, and technical depth displayed throughout the competition was impressive and a strong indicator of the talent entering our industry.

While our primary focus remains the Mechanical program, students also competed in categories such as preconstruction, heavy civil, commercial, mixed-use, and electrical.  The breadth of disciplines represented highlights the collaborative nature of construction and the many career pathways available to aspiring professionals.  Discover more details here.

We congratulate the top three finishers in the Mechanical category for delivering exceptional presentations and demonstrating the kind of problem-solving and teamwork that define success in our industry. We look forward to crossing paths again with these talented students at an interview or a future project site.  At Murray Company, investing in the next generation isn’t just about recruiting — it’s about strengthening the future of construction.

Congratulations to the Top 3 Mechanical Problem Finishers:
