Aroo! Aroo! Aroo! Murray Company Conquers the Spartan 5K

Aroo! Aroo! Aroo! Murray Company Conquers the Spartan 5K

On Saturday, April 18th, a group of Murray Company team members including Derek Bee, Tina Hayati, Ethan Lendo, Katie Tornblom, Marta Michel-Lodge, Joey Morris, and Landon Randolph voluntarily stepped outside the office and into the arena, participating in a Spartan 5K at Pala Raceway near San Diego. The event featured a demanding 3.1-mile (5K) course paired with 20 obstacles designed to test both physical grit and mental toughness.

For those unfamiliar, Spartan races are part of a global obstacle course series that combines endurance running with functional challenges, ranging anywhere from 5K sprints to 50K ultra events. In this case, the course included everything from wall climbs and bucket carries to barbed wire crawls, monkey bars, plate drags, and a rope climb among others.

This fun event brought together more than 80 participants including general contractors, subcontractors, and industry partners.  Murray Company’s 7 team members held their own! The event was sponsored and organized by our trade partner, McCandless Tile, creating a unique opportunity to connect outside of the traditional work environment.  Adding to the camaraderie were the team shirts designed by our very own Marketing Assistant, Kristen Steffey.

At the 12 PM wave start, over 150 energized participants (including the general public/non-team members) gathered at the starting corral, rallying together with the familiar Spartan chant: “We are Spartans—Aroo! Aroo! Aroo!”—setting the tone for what would be a challenging and rewarding experience.

With temperatures pushing into the 90s, the course delivered an added layer of intensity and for any obstacles not completed successfully, 20 burpees were on deck. But through teamwork, encouragement, and a shared competitive spirit, participants pushed through each obstacle and crossed the finish line where they were greeted by a finisher’s medal.

The day wrapped up with well-earned refreshments, a great lunch, and plenty of stories to share. More importantly, it was a reminder of the relationships that drive our industry, built not only through projects, but through shared experiences like this one.

A few bumps, bruises, and scratches may have come with the territory, but so did lasting memories, new connections, and a lot of great content for everyone’s highlight reel.

Here are some event highlights!
