Murray Company’s NorCal team came together on Thursday, October 1st at UA Local 342’s Training Center in Concord, CA for the Annual NorCal Safety Meeting. More than 90 field and office team members supporting the NorCal office filled the room. Breakfast was served at 6:15 am, and the program got underway at 7:00 a.m. with a walk through of the day’s agenda.
Chairman/CEO Jim DeFlavio and Terry James, President NorCal & National Advanced Technologies, opened the meeting with warm welcomes and laid out the game plan for the day. SoCal President Ryan Cavanaugh also took the stage, emphasizing Murray Company’s safety culture and thanking everyone for their buy-in to the company’s safety program.
The morning was centered on safety fundamentals. Corporate Safety Manager Justin Myburg delivered the Safety Summary and spoke on the importance of being proactive. Safety Manager Austin DeHart followed with Crane Work Planning and Lessons Learned, and NorCal Safety Director Rex Motzkus presented Rigging and the Importance of Load Control.
After a short break, keynote speaker Mark Breslin took the stage. Mark also spoke at the SoCal Safety meeting the following Friday, discussing the importance of safety and leadership.
After lunch, the afternoon kicked off with the 2026 Golden Hard Hat presentation, an award presented following a live quiz regarding the safety program. This year’s winner was Piping Superintendent Steve Upton – congrats, Steve!
One message ran through every session: every person on a Murray Company jobsite has the authority to stop unsafe work. That is the heart of Stop Work Authority.
The day was a tremendous success. Thank you to everyone who attended and helped make it one. Thank you also to our speakers and to everyone who helped organize the event.
